Hydrogen powered vehicles are the future

 

 

Your task will be to discuss the statement above and find arguments that could be used in support of this statement (pros), and which arguments could be used against this statement (cons).

1.      Lesson:  Work in groups of 5.

·        What is hydrogen and what makes it a useful energy source?

·        How can you produce hydrogen as an energy source in an economical way?

·        What is the best way to store hydrogen?

·        Pros and cons of using hydrogen as an energy source

·        Hydrogen powered vehicles

Write down what you know about each of these subjects. It is important that each student writes down all of the group ideas. You will have 30 minutes to work on this.

 

Each individual chooses one of the five topics as a specialty. Specialists then meet to discuss their findings and compare notes.

 

2.      Lesson:  The specialists on the five topics meet and try to find solutions to their problems. Use the textbook as a resource as well as the photocopies from the teacher. Specialists form 2-3 questions that they would like to know more about. Show the questions to the teacher at the end of the lesson.

 

3.      Lesson:  (26/4)  A Specialist on Hydrogen usage visists the class. Students get a chance to ask questions. For further information, look at: http://www.gagarin.is/nyorka/index_is.html.

Hydrogen project FÁ introduced. The Hydrogen project, devised by the students at FÁ, was chosen as the Icelandic contribution to the Young Scientists competition held in Budapest in September 2003. The project involved the use of hydrogen energy to supply a house with power. The excess energy was then stored in the form of hydrogen. See website at:

4.      Lesson:  Workgroups meet and write a report on the use of hydrogen as a power source. The report should be in the form of a Power-point slideshow in English (4-6 slides). It is our intention to introduce this project abroad. This project is part of the Comenius project, in which the school is participating and is mainly focused on ecotourism. Produce a finished report/presentation and focus on the quality of the material and not the quantity. Each group may choose which part of the project it concentrates on, but it must do so in collaboration with the teacher.

 

5.      Lesson:  Work on slideshows.

 

6.      Lesson:  An english teacher visits and helps við the language. Slideshows turned in. The slideshows will be exhibited at the following website: http://www2.fa.is/deildir/Efnafraedi/nat123/h03/orka/

 

Evaluation:

1.      The specialists’ questions (20%)

2.      Report (60%)

3.      Attendance (20%)
